This weekend is 61 years since the end of the Korean War.
이번 주말이면 한국 전쟁이 끝난 지 61년된 날입니다.
It's a war not many Australian kids would have heard about.
한국 전쟁은 호주 아이들에게는 좀 낯선 전쟁입니다.
But hundreds of Aussie soldiers died during it.
하지만 몇 백 명의 호주 군인들이 한국 전쟁 중 전사 하였는데요.

So to find out more we sent Rookie Reporter Amy over to South Korea.
그럼 신입 리포터 에이미를 남한으로 보내서 더 알아 봅시다.
Here's her report. 에이미의 리포트 입니다.


AMY: This is South Korea. It's a pretty cool country with amazing palaces, interesting markets and even some fancy shops! That's where I and my friends got to visit recently.
여기는 남한 입니다.
굉장한 궁전들과 흥미로운 시장들 그리고 화려하고 고급스러운 가게들도 있어요.
자 여기가 저와 제 친구들이 최근 방문한 나라예요.

But we weren't there to see the sights. We were there to learn more about a war that Australia helped fight here more than 60 years ago.
하지만 관광하러 이곳에 온 것은 아니에요. 우리는 호주가 60년전에 일어난 전쟁에 어떻게 도움을 줬는지에 대해 배우기 위해 왔어요.
It was called the Korean War because the two halves of Korea were fighting against each other, North Korea versus South Korea.
이 전쟁은 한국 전쟁이라고 해요. 두 개로 나눠진 한국이 서로를 대적하여 싸웠어요. 북한 대 남한이죠.

South Korea needed help so countries like the US and Australia got involved. 17,000 Aussies came over and 340 were killed here.

남한은 도움이 필요해서 미국 그리고 호주 같은 여러 나라들이 와서 도와줬어요.
17,000명의 호주 군인이 참전하여 340명이 전사 했어요.

  We were lucky enough to be there on ANZAC Day to commemorate the Battle of Kapyong.
운 좋게도 저희가 AZAC Day(호주의 현충일 같은 것)에 맞춰 가평전을 기념하기 위한 행사에 참여 할 수 있었어요.

We were told that battle was the most important that we fought in.
호주가 싸운 교전 중 가장 중요한 교전이라고 들었어요.

 The other side were trying to get to the capital of South Korea but Aussie soldiers did an amazing job stopping them. They helped keep South Korea safe

다른 편(북한 쪽)이 한국의 수도를 점령하고 했고 호주 군인들 덕분에 그들을 막을 수 있었다고 해요. 그들은 남한을 안전하게 지키는데 도움을 주었어요.
  Later on we visited a war cemetery. Here we spent some time looking at the names of some of the Aussies that died here.
그 후에 우리는 전몰자 공동 묘지에 방문 했어요. 여기서 우리는 시간을 내어 전사한 호주 군인들의 이름들을 찾았고요.
  It was pretty moving. 가슴이 뭉클했어요.
 But one of the most amazing parts of the trip was going to the border of North and South Korea.
 이번 여행에서 가장 놀라운 경험 중 하나는 북한과 남한의 경계를 방문 하는 것이었어요.
  Even now, so many years on, things are pretty tense between North and South Korea. So they have a bit of land between them where there's no fighting allowed!
수십년이 지난 지금 까지도 북한과 남한 사이에는 긴장이 맴돌고 있어요. 그래서 북한과 남한 사이의 땅을 비워 두고 싸움이 허락되지 않는 곳을 만들어 놨어요.

If you look at this map, it's this bit. It's called the demilitarized zone.
이 지도를 보면 여기 작은 부분이 있어요. DMZ라고 불리는 비무장 지대에요.
It's about 4 killer-metres wide and 250 killer-metres long. It's mostly used for meetings between the two countries now, in buildings like this!
약 4km 넓이에 250km 길이 정도 됩니다. 비무장 지대는 보통 두 나라의 회의 장소로 이용됩니다. 이렇게 생긴 건물에서죠.
While there is a lot of military stuff at the border, there are also prayer ribbons everywhere! People put them here asking for peace.
많은 군사용 물건들이 국경에 있는 반면에 평화를 바라는 많은 사람들이 리본을 묶어 놓았어요.
During this trip, we learnt a lot about a war that I had no idea Australia was involved in and hopefully now you know a bit more about it too.
 이번 여행으로 우리는 호주가 참가했다고는 생각지도 못한 전쟁에 대해 배웠어요. 여러분도 한국 전쟁에 대해 이제 조금 알았으면 좋겠네요.


이번 스토리는 지난 7월에 나온 뉴스이지만 G20를 보면서 한 번쯤 다뤄 보고 싶은 주제이기에 늦었지만 올려 봅니다.
한국 사람들에게는 너무 익숙한 한국 전쟁이지만 사실 호주에서는 아직도 잘 모르는 사람들이 많아요.
 저도 한국의 War Memorial(한국 전쟁 기념관)에서 호주는 미국, 영국에 이어 세 번째로 많은 군인이 참전한 나라라는 걸 알고 놀랐는데요.
 게다가 호주는 인구도 정말 작은데 말이죠.


세계에서는 한국의 전쟁을Forgotten War 라고 합니다. 혹자는 Ignored War라고 하죠.
 Ideology가 팽배하던 냉전시기(Cold war)에 미국과 소련의 힘 싸움이 힘 없는 나라 한국에서 일어났던 거였으니…

그 누구도 왜 북한과 남한이 전쟁을 했는지 누가 책임을 져야 하는지에 대해서 말을 아끼고 회피하고 싶어하는 주제이기 때문에 이런 별명아닌 별명이 붙지 않았나 생각 합니다.
